March 2024 | Highlights from Haiti

By March 12, 2024No Comments

The new year is off to a complicated start. The social and political landscape of the country is elevated to new levels. The violence, and threats of violence, is at a new high. The morale in the country is at a new low. Continued kidnappings, prison breaks and terrorizing threats from gangs make survival more complicated than ever.

Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep him in perfect peace, all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!”

So we fix our eyes, our thoughts, our trust on the one who can bring perfect peace. Regardless of the situation in the country, our God is the provider of perfect peace.

Peace is exactly what He is providing through the ministry of Children’s Hope. Our children and staff remain safe behind the walls and gates of our children’s home compound. Our security team is on high alert 24/7. The clinic is open and seeing victims of the violence. The children are still able to attend school. These things are such a blessing in the chaos.

We have a few more things that we wanted to highlight and share with you about some of the exciting things happening at Children’s Hope.

Medical Clinic

Dental Care

Strengthening families and serving the community through medical care is a critical part of our mission in Haiti.

Jacmel has very few options when it comes to dental care, that’s why it’s important to us to serve the community that way. With our full time dentist and dental hygienist working in the clinic, we were able to see 1130 dental patients last year, and this year we plan to see just as many, if not more.

Thank you to dentist Dr. Andy Patrice Chery and his staff for the dental work they do to serve the community of Jacmel in the name of Jesus.

Serving the Community

Feeding Program

The persistent turmoil in Haiti persists, resulting in food insecurity, shortages in the supply chain, and widespread inflation. These issues have caused many to go hungry. One of the most at-risk groups is the elderly. Many of them are widows. Most cannot earn enough to afford enough food.

Children’s Hope has been diligently serving the most vulnerable elderly members of our community by organizing bi-monthly food distributions. Each distribution ensures that individuals in need receive ample supplies of cooking oil and rice, sufficient to sustain them for approximately two weeks.

The hard reality is that over the course of the last year, these food distributions have dramatically increased in cost. But, we are determined to continue meeting this critical need. We must!

Thank you for all of your compassionate support and prayers. Together, we are truly changing and saving lives in Haiti in the name of Jesus.

Serving through Education

Field Trip to Fort Ogé

Sometimes, the best way to learn is a field trip. Our students recently took a field trip to explore Fort Ogé. They were able to learn beyond the classroom by actually walking around and exploring this important historical landmark.

Built in 1804, Fort Ogé is one of about 20 military sites strategically placed around the country. It was built to be a safe refuge for the newly freed people of Haiti and to deter any counteroffensive actions they were preparing for. It is currently maintained by the local community and may be one of Jacmel’s more important historical locations.

The social and political landscape in Haiti is changing on a daily basis.  Every day, there are new stories that are coming out that are momentous.  We are truly watching history being made before our eyes.

We are focussed on our mission inside this changing landscape, and we certainly don’t want to become a news source.  Journalism is not our mission.  That being said, we are often asked, “What’s going on in Haiti?”.

Here are a few articles you might want to read to help you get caught up, and understand some of the things that are happening in Haiti.

Interested in Sponsoring a Child?

You can change the life of a child in Haiti. Children’s Hope cares for over 60 children at our children’s home in Haiti.

These are all children from hard places or difficult situations. At Children’s Hope, they are secure, they are loved, and they have the opportunity to thrive. They are taught God’s great love for them and that He has a good plan for their life.

The monthly giving of our child sponsors makes this all possible.
